SMG is the only operation with an Alaska heli skiing season that runs roughly from October through May, and the light changes meaningfully across it. Early season brings the coldest snow and often the deepest snow but shorter days. However, even on the shortest day of the year in December skiing can be had from roughly 9:30am-3:15pm. The best months of the season (ranked in order of 'epic-ness' are November, February, January, March, December, and April. The typical guide to guest ratio is industry leading at a 2:4, but often guests opt for less than 4 skiers in their group, or chose to add more guides. It is not uncommon for a single guest to book the entire heli and bring 3 guides with them for a 3:1 guide to guest ratio and the ultimate in guest service and satisfaction. Every SMG trip is fully private with only one group of guests each week. That means no sharing helicopters, runs or waiting on other guests. Even if you book a private helicopter (at just about every other heli operation in the world), you will be fighting for terrain with other helicopters and other skiers within their own operation.
